1.06 g of ethyl α-ethoxyimino-2-(chloroacetylamino)-thiazol-4-ylacetate is suspended in a solution of 0.94 g of potassium hydroxide in a mixture of 40 ml of ethanol and 2 ml of water and the suspension is stirred at room temperature to make it to be a solution, followed by further stirring for 45 minutes at room temperature. The reaction solution is subjected to the distillation of ethanol under reduced pressure and the residue is adjusted to pH 2.0 with 1N hydrochloric acid under ice-cooling, to precipitate crystals. The crystals are filtered, washed with water and dried. The procedure yields 0.88 g of α-ethoxyimino-2-(chloroacetylamino)thiazol-4-ylacetic acid. Yield 91%.
