Procedure
1-(3-Thienyl)phenethyl alcohol (10 g, 49 mmol) was dissolved in a 2:1 pyridine and acetic anhydride mixture (50 ml). This was stirred at 80° C. for 4 h. Excess of pyridine and acetic anhydride mixture was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was dissolved in water (100 ml). This was extracted with methylene chloride (3×75 ml) and the combined organic layers was dried over MgSO4 and filtered. Removal of the solvent gave 1-(3-thienyl)phenethyl acetate (10.2 g, 84% yield).
