A solution of sodium hydroxide, 2-methoxyethanol and ether was added to 50 mg (0.11 mmol) of ethyl 4-[(E)-2-(3-bromo-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5,5,8,8-tetramethylnaphthalen-2-yl)propen-1-yl]benzoate (Compound 14) and the resulting mixture stirred at room temperature for 17 hours. Solvent was removed in-vacuo and the resulting solid taken-up in water, acidified using 2N HCl, and extracted with ether. The ether extracts were washed with water, brine and dried (MgSO4). The solvent was removed in-vacuo to give the title compound as a white solid.
