Procedure
A portion of dihydro 1-hydroxy-7-trifluoromethyl-β-carboline (6 mg) in xylenes (1 ml) was treated with Pd/C (10%, 7 mg) and the mixture heated at 50° C. for one week. The reaction was concentrated after filtering it through celite, and the residue was chromatographed (1:1 hexane-ethyl acetate) on silica gel to give 1 mg of 1-hydroxy-7-trifluoromethyl-β-carboline. A portion of dihydro 1-hydroxy-7-trifluoromethyl-β-carboline (25 mg) in THF (1 ml) was treated with a solution of lithium aluminum hydride in THF (1M, 0.5 ml). The reaction was stirred at 60° C. for 6 h before quenching with water (5 ml) and extracting with ethyl acetate (3 times 10 ml). The combined organic layers were dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to provide tetrahydro 7-trifluoro-methyl-β-carboline. This material was taken up in xylenes (5 ml) and treated with Pd/C (10%, 15 mg). The mixture was stirred at 150° C. for 48 h before filtering through celite and concentrating. The residue was chromatographed (ethyl acetate) on silica gel to give 5 mg of 7-tri-fluoromethyl-β-carboline.
