A mixture 7-chloro-β-carboline (500 mg, 2.48 mmol) in concentrated nitric acid (20 ml) was stirred at RT for 22 h. The reaction mixture was carefully poured into cold (3° C. to 5° C.) water (50 ml), and after stirring for 2 h the precipitate was collected. The solid was suspended in saturated aqueous NaHCO3 (50 ml) and stirred at RT for 12 h. The product was filtered and washed with water to provide 550 mg of 7-chloro-9-nitro-β-carboline.
