Procedure
A mixture composed of 900 mg (3.65 mmol) of (4-chlorobiphenyl-2-yl)acetic acid (J. Am. Chem. Soc. (1955), 77, 2325), 25 ml of absolute ethanol and 50 μl of concentrated sulfuric acid is refluxed for 8 hours. After cooling and concentrating under vacuum, the reaction medium is taken up in ether, washed with saturated NaHCO3 solution and then with water, and then dried over Na2SO4. After concentrating under vacuum, 1 g of a yellow oil is obtained.
