Procedure

Add a solution of phosphorous tribromide (1.5 equivalents) in ether (10 mL/g) to a solution of (7-chloro-1,3-dioxa-5-thia-s-indacen-6-yl)-methanol (1.64 g, 6.8 mmol) in ether (20 mL/g) at 0° C. Stir to room temp for an hour. Pour onto ice water, wash with water, saturated sodium bicarbonate, brine, dry, and concentrate to afford the title compound as a white powder (1.96 g, 95%): 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.17 (s, 1H), 7.13 (s, 1H), 6.05 (s, 2H), 4.72 (d, 2H).
