To a solution of tert-butyl 3-cyclohexyl-3-(hydroxymethyl)-8-azabicyclo[3.2.1]octane-8-carboxylate (3-3) (0.870 g, 2.69 mmol) in methylene chloride was added diisopropylamine (0.562 mL, 3.23 mmol), dimethylaminopyridine (32.5 mg, 0.269 mmol), and methanesulfonyl chloride (0.229 mL, 2.97 mmol). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for four hours and diluted with methylene chloride, washed with water, a saturated aqueous solution of NaHCO3, and 1 N HCl aqueous solution, dried over anhydrous MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated to give (3-4) as a colorless oil.
