Procedure

To a mixture of 4.13 g of the material from Step A and 0.25 g of 10% palladium on carbon was added 150 mL of ethanol. The reaction mixture was stirred under a balloon of hydrogen for three days. The mixture was filtered through celite and the solvent was removed with a rotary evaporator to afford 3.65 g of the title compound as a brown oil. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 1.03 (d, 6H), 2.21 (s, 1H), 3.60 (m, 1H), 4.57 (br d, 1H), 4.86 (br s, 2H), 6.73 (dd, 1H), 7.24 (d, 1H), 7.64 (d, 1H).
