Reaction Steps

To a solution of 4 (8.5 g, 25 mmol) in formic acid (100 ml) under nitrogen was added 10% palladium/carbon catalyst (600 mg) and the mixture heated at reflux overnight. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, filtered and evaporated to dryness. Water (100 ml) was added and the mixture stirred for 2 h. The white precipitate was filtered, washed with water (2×50 ml) and dried to give the light brown/yellow solid 2-[6-methoxycarbonyl-3-(4-tolyl)imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine-3-yl]acetic acid 5 (7.9 g, 97%).
