Procedure
5-Nitro-3-pyrazole-carboxylic acid (8 g, 50.90 mmol) and sulfuric acid (5 mL, 1.48 mmol) in methanol (200 mL) were heated to reflux for 4 hrs. The solvent was evaporated and the residue was resuspended in CH2Cl2 and washed with water and brine and dried Na2SO4. Methyl 5-nitro-1H-pyrazole-3-carboxylate (7.5 g, 86%) was obtained as a white solid.
