Procedure

A solution of 2-piperazin-1-yl-ethanol (5.10 g, 38.4 mmol) in EtOH (30 mL) was cooled to 0° C. and treated portionwise with 1-bromomethyl-4-nitro-benzene (8.30 g, 38.4 mmol). The mixture was allowed to warm to RT and stir at that temperature for 3 h. The mixture was filtered, and the solid was washed with EtOH and air-dried to afford the title compound (9.72 g, 73%) as a white solid. Mass spectrum (ESI, m/z): Calcd. for C13H19N3O3, 266.1 (M+H). found 266.2.
