A mixture of NaN3 (0.6 g, 9.22 mmol) and methyl pentafluorobenzoate (1.76 g, 7.78 mmol) in acetone (16 mL) and water (6 mL) was refluxed for 8 hours. The mixture was cooled and then water (20 mL) was added, and the solution was extracted using diethyl ether (3×10 mL). The extracts were dried with Na2SO4 and the mixture was filtered. Solvent was evaporated to give 2 as a white power (1.67 g, yield=86%)
