Procedure

A mixture of 4-chloro-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine (2.50 g, 16.4 mmol) and N-benzyl piperazine (3.18 g, 18.0 mmol) were melted at 175° C. for 3 hours in a sealed tube, resulting in the formation of a crystalline solid mass. A solution of 0.1 M aqueous NaOH (10 mL) was added and the solid was broken up to give a suspension. Filtration gave 4-(4-benzyl-piperazin-1-yl)-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine as a white solid (3.90 g). LCMS (APCI+) m/z 293 [M+H]+.
