To a mixture of 8-(3-fluorophenyl)-7-formylquinoline-5-carbonitrile (20 mg, 0.07 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (1 mL) was added 1.4 M methylmagnesium bromide in tetrahydrofuran (0.12 mL, 0.17 mmol) at −78° C. The reaction was stirred at −78° C. for 30 minutes, quenched with water at −78° C. The mixture was neutralized with 1 N HCl, and then extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined orgagnic layers were washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated to dryness. The residue was used directly in the next step (20 mg, 90%). LCMS calculated for C18H14FN2O (M+H)+: m/z=293.1; Found: 293.0.
