To a solution of Methyl 4-(2-fluoro-4-nitrophenyl)butanoate (84) (43 mg, 0.18 mmol) in methanol (1 mL) and water (3 mL) was added sodium hydroxide (0.18 g, 4.50 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at 21° C. overnight. The reaction mixture was quenched with 1 N HCl solution and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×30 mL). The organic layer was dried over MgSO4, concentrated to give 4-(2-Fluoro-4-nitrophenyl)butanoic acid (82) (40 mg, 98%) and the residue was used without further purification.
