Procedure

A solution of 2,2-dimethyl-3-(4-fluoro-3-phenoxybenzyloxy)propan- 1-ol (5.0 g) in dichloromethane (30 cm3) was added dropwise to a stirred suspension of pyridinium chlorochromate (6.77 g) in dichloromethane (20 cm3) whilst the reaction temperature was maintained within the range 0°-5° C. When the addition was complete the mixture was allowed to warm to the ambient temperature over a period of 2 hours. The solvent was removed and the residual oil (3.0 g) purified by column chromatography using a silica gel column and eluting with a 10:1 (by volume) mixture mixture of petroleum ether (boiling range 40°-60°) and diethyl ether to yield 2,2-dimethyl-3-(4-fluoro-3-phenoxybenzyloxy)propan-1-al (1.5 g) as a yellow oil.
