Ethyl (Z)-2-hydroxyimino-3-oxobutyrate (3.2 g, 20 mmol) was converted into the title compound by reaction with 2-iodopropane in an analogous reaction to that described in Example 4a Method 1, except that reaction was complete in 3 h. After purification the title compound was obtained as an oil (3.01 g; 74%); νmax (CH2Cl2) 1740, 1685, 1600, 1370, 1315, 1225 and 1070 cm-1 ; δH (CDCl3) 1.31 (3H, t, J 6.5 Hz), 1.33 (6H, d, J 6.5 Hz), 2.37 (3H, s), 4.38 (2H, q, J 6.5 Hz), ca 4.6 (1H, m) [Mass spectrum (+ve ion, 3NNOBA) MH+ (202)].
