600 mg (1.68 mmol) of rac -(αS*,3S*,4R*)-3-[1-(t-butyldimethylsilyloxy)ethyl]-4-[(p-methoxyphenyl)thio]-2-azetidinone are dissolved in 35 ml of tetrahydrofuran/methanol/12 percent hydrochloric acid (4:2:1), whereupon the solution is stirred at room temperature for 4 hours and worked-up as described in Example 2. There is obtained rac-(αS*,3S*,4R*) -3-(1-hydroxyethyl)-4-[(p-methoxyphenyl)thio]-2-azetidinone as a colourless oil; IR: 1765 cm-1.
