Reaction of ethyl α-methyl-p-hydroxyphenylacetate with ethyl α-bromo-o-toluate by the method described in Example 1b provides ethyl 4-(2-ethoxycarbonylbenzyloxy)-α-methylphenylacetate as a clear oil.
