Procedure
Purified aniline (15.0 g, 0.16 mole) was reacted with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (19.8 ml, 0.15 mole) in 400 ml methanol according to the procedure of Heindel, et al., J. Het. Chem. 1966, 3, 222. The reaction was refluxed for 18 hours, then worked up by evaporating the solvent, dissolving the residue in ether, and washing consecutively with 0.5 N HCl, H2O, and sat. NaCl. The organic layer was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated. The crude product was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel in 80/20 hexane/EtOAc which yielded 29.14 g of the Michael Adduct, dimethyl anilinofumarate as a light yellow oil.
