Procedure
4-Oxo-4-(3,4-dihydro-3-oxo-2H-1,4-benzoxazin-7-yl)-3-methylbutyric acid (5 g) was suspended in methanol (50 ml) and acetyl chloride (0.5 ml) added. The mixture was heated on a steam bath until all of the solid dissolved. The solvent was evaporated at reduced pressure providing the ester as a white foam which was recrystallized from ethyl acetate-methanol to give the product as white crystals, yield 5 g, mp 95°-98° C.
