Reaction Steps
To a solution of 2.49 g of 4-trimethylsilyloxy-4-(4-phenoxybutyl)-2-cyclopentenone dissolved in 50 ml of methanol was added 3.9 ml of an aqueous 30% hydrogen peroxide under ice-cooling and stirring. An amount of 390 μl of 1N aqueous sodium hydroxide was added, and the mixture was stirred for 2 hours. Then saturated aqueous ammonium chloride was added, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. After filtration and concentration, the concentrate was subjected to silica gel column chromatography to give 892 mg (yield 34%) of 2,3-epoxy-4-trimethylsilyloxy-4-(4-phenoxybutyl)cyclopentanone and 1.38 g (yield 53%) of 2,3-epoxy-4-hydroxy-4-(4-phenoxybutyl)cyclopentanone.
