Procedure
trans-Methyl 4-(2,2-dibromovinyl)cyclohexanecarboxylate (4.2 g) was stirred in a solution of potassium hydroxide (1.09 g) in methanol (50 ml) overnight. The solvent was then removed under reduced pressure. Water (50 ml) was added and the mixture extracted with diethyl ether. The aqueous layer was then acidified with hydrochloric acid. Re-extraction with ether was followed by washing of the organic layer with brine and drying over anhydrous magnesium sulphate. Evaporation gave trans-4-(2,2-dibromovinyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (3.6 g) as a pale yellow oil.
