Reaction Steps
To a stirred solution of 5,5-di-(hydroxymethyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane (5.0 g) (Beilstein 19, II, 93) in dry dimethylformamide (50 ml) under nitrogen, at 20°, was added sodium hydride (0.68 g, 80% dispersion in oil). The mixture was stirred at 80° for 2 hours and cooled. Ethyl iodide (4.4 g) in dry dimethylformamide (40 ml) was added and the mixture was heated at 110° for 3 hours. The mixture was cooled and poured into water. The aqueous mixture was extracted with diethyl ether. The ethereal extracts were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulphate and evaporated in vacuo. 2,2-Dimethyl-5-ethoxymethyl-5-hydroxymethyl-1,3-dioxane was obtained as a pale yellow oil (1.2 g) and was used without further purification.
