Reaction Steps

3,4-Dihydroxybenzoic acid (3.08 g, 0.02 mol) was dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (50 ml) and treated with 4-methoxybenzyl chloride (10 ml, 0.07 mol) and potassium carbonate (10 g, 0.07 mol). The mixture was warmed to 60° C. for 6 h and then stirred overnight. The mixture was partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The organic phase was washed exhaustively with water and then the product was purified on silica gel 60 eluting with mixtures of ethyl acetate and hexane to give the title compound (6.48 g, 63%).
