Procedure

A solution of ethyl trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-[2-(2-methyl-prop-2-yl)pyrimidin-5-yl]cyclopropane carboxylate (2.6 g) in ethanol (50 cm3) was mixed with a solution of sodium hydroxide (1.0 g) in water (50 cm3) and the mixture stirred at the ambient temperature for 5 hours. After removal of the bulk of the ethanol by evaporation under reduced pressure the pH of the residual mixture was adjusted to 3 with dilute hydrochloric acid. The mixture was extracted with diethyl ether (2×200 cm3), and the combined extracts washed with water and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulphate. Evaporation of the ether under reduced pressure yielded trans-2,2-dimethyl-3-[2-(2-methylprop-2-yl)pyrimidin-5-yl]cyclopropane carboxylic acid (2.1 g), melting point 168°-9° C.
