Procedure
To a stirred solution of 8-methyl-6-(2,4-dimethylimidazol-1-yl)-2-(1H)-quinolone (0.5 g) in concentrated sulphuric acid (4 cm3) at 0° was added concentrated nitric acid (1 cm3). The mixture was stirred for 1 hour, poured carefully onto ice (100 g), and the solution basified to pH8 with solid sodium carbonate. The resulting suspension was extracted with dichloromethane (3×100 cm3) and the combined organic phases were dried (MgSO4), filtered, and evaporated to yield a foam which was triturated with ethyl acetate/ether to afford 8-methyl-6-(2,4-dimethyl-5-nitro-imidazol-1-yl)-2-(1H)-quinolone, m.p. 244°-247°, (0.52 g).
