Procedure

In 20 ml of methanol was dissolved 1.75 g of dimethyl 2,2',3,4-tetramethoxy-3',4'-methylenedioxy-1,1'- biphenyl-6,6'-dicarboxylate obtained in Example 2, and 1 ml of a 10% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide was added to the solution and the mixture was heated and refluxed for 16 hours. After termination of the reaction, the reaction mixture was cooled and the precipitated crystals were recovered by filtration and recrystallized from methanol to obtain 1.3 g of 2,2',3,4-tetramethoxy-3',4'-methylenedioxy-1,1' -biphenyl-6,6'-dicarboxylic acid (the yield was 81%).
