Into 35.0 parts of methyl 5-(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)-5-methyl-hexanoate from Example 9, 2.0 parts of 98% sulphuric acid, and 200 parts of toluene, was passed isobutylene for 2 hours at 75° C. After washing the toluene solution with 10% sodium hydroxide solution and then water, the toluene was stripped off and the residue distilled to give methyl 5-(3-t-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)-5-methyl-hexanoate b0.3 168°-72° C. with the following percentage composition by weight.
