Ethyl-4′-methoxy-4-biphenylcarboxylate (1.29 g) was dissolved in methanol (7.5 mL) and sodium hydroxide (2 N in water, 7.5 mL) was added. The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 9 days and concentrated to dryness. Water (50 mL) was added and the mixture was made acidic with HCl (6 N in water). The precipitate was removed by filtration and dried under vacuum giving 4′-methoxy-4-biphenylcarboxylic acid (1.08 g). Yield=94%.
