Reaction Steps
To a solution-of C-(4-Chloro-phenyl)-N-(1,1-dimethyl-2-oxo-propyl)-methanesulfonamide, 4.2 g (15.0 mmol) in 60 mL of dimethylformamide was added 1.3 g (31.5 mmol) of sodium hydride. The reaction mixture was heated at 90° C. for 24 H, then cooled to ambient temperature and concentrated to dryness. The residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water and was acidified to pH=3.0 with 1 N HCl. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organics were washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated to dryness. The residue was chromatographed over silica using chloroform as eluant to yield 3.27 g (80%) of the desired product, shown below, as a tan solid. 1H-NMR is consistent with structure; MS (ion spray) 270.3 (M−1); Anal. Calc'd for C12H14ClNO2S: C, 53.04; H, 5.19; N, 5.15. Found: C, 52.72; H, 5.18; N, 4.98. 5-(4-Chloro-phenyl)-3,3,4-trimethyl-2,3-dihydro-isothiazole 1,1-dioxide.
