To a suspension of methyl 4-(2-hydroxybenzyl)benzoate (0.053 g) and 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-acetyl-β-D-glucopyranose (0.26 g) in dichloromethane (1 mL) and toluene (3 mL) was added boron trifluoride-diethyl ether complex (0.083 mL), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (eluent: hexane/ethyl acetate=4/1) to give 2-(4-methoxycarbonyl-benzyl)phenyl 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (0.067 g).
