5.2 g. of 2-(ethylaminomethylene)-5-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-oxo-4-pentenoic acid methyl ester in 50 ml. of dimethylformamide were held at 140°-150° C. for 3 hours. After removal of the solvent, there was obtained 1-ethyl-6-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-oxo-1,4,5,6-tetrahydronicotinic acid methyl ester in the form of a uniform oily residue.
