Reaction Steps

To a solution of 2-(N-methyl-N-benzylamino)ethyl 2-methyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-5-ethoxycarbonyl-6-formyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylate (1.5 g) in ethanol (15 ml) was added sodium borohydride (112 mg) under stirring and ice-cooling, and this mixture was further stirred for 20 minutes at the same temperature. The reaction mixture was adjusted with 0.1N hydrochloric acid to pH 6 to 7 under ice-cooling, and concentrated under reduced pressure. To the residue was added ethyl acetate and water, and the aqueous layer was further washed with ethyl acetate twice. The extract obtained above and the washings were put together, washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure to give an oil (1.48 g) of 2-(N-methyl-N-benzylamino)ethyl 2-methyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-5-ethoxycarbonyl-6-hydroxymethyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylate.
