Procedure
A mixture of methyl (1RS,3RS)-cis-1-n-propyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline-3-carboxylate (1.3 g), 1N NaOH (5.5 ml) and methanol (8 ml) is stirred at room temperature for 1.5 hours. The mixture is distilled under reduced pressure to remove methanol. The residue is adjusted to pH 4 with 10% HCl, and the precipitated crystals are collected by filtration, washed with water and then dried to give the title compound (1.0 g, 81%) as colorless needles, m.p. 225°-226° C.
