Reaction Steps
3-Cyano-6-hydroxy-4-methylpyrid-2-one was prepared from ethyl acetoacetate and cyanoacetamide following the procedure of Bobbitt and Scola (J. Org. Chem. 25, 560, 1960). 3-Cyano-4,5-dimethyl-6-hydroxypyrid-2-one was similarly prepared from ethyl methylacetoacetate and cyanoacetamide.
