Procedure

Phenyl chlorocarbonate (15.05 mL) was added at 020 C. to a solution of 2-amino-5-phenylpyrazine (17.12 g) in pyridine (200 mL). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. To the reaction mixture was added water (200 mL) and ethyl ether (200 mL). The whole was stirred to provide a suspension containing the subject compound as a crystal. The crystal was collected by filtration and further washed with ethyl ether (50 mL) and then dried under reduced pressure to provide the subject compound (24.57 g) as colorless crystals (melting point 192-198° C., decomposed).
