A solution of 3-(azidocarbonyl)-1-(ethoxycarbonyl)indole Suvorov (ibid) (1.32 g, 5.12 mmol) in benzene (25 ml) was heated to reflux for 7 hours. After cooling to room temperature, THF (25 ml) and [2-(3-indolyl)-2-oxoethyl]ammonium bromide [Oikawa,Y. et al. Heterocycles 12 (1979) 1457-1462] (1.31 g, 5.12 mmol) were added immediately followed by ethyldiisopropylamine (0.89 ml, 5.12 mmol). After stirring for 1.5 hours the formed precipitate was removed by filtration and washed with THF followed by water. The sub-title compound (1.65 g, 79%) was obtained as a white solid after drying.
