Procedure

In an ice bath, ethyl 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-3-aminonaphthalene-2-carboxylate (Compound C, 150 mg, 0.55 mmol) was added 0.24 ml of HBF4 (48% solution in water), followed by a solution of NaNO2 (81 mg, 1.16 mmol) in 1 ml of water. The slurry was left in a refrigerator for 3 days. The reaction mixture was washed successively with ethyl acetate until TLC showed no UV visible spot at the baseline. The ethyl acetate layer was dried with MgSO4 and the solution was concentrated to an oil. The oil was further dissolved in 1 ml of toluene and the mixture was heated under reflux for 2 h. After the reaction cooled to room temperature, solvent was evaporated and the residue was passed through a column (silica gel, ethyl acetate/hexane 1/10) to give the title compound as an oil.
