65 parts by weight of 3-(2'-chloro-4'-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-toluene and 2 parts by weight of phosphorus pentachloride were treated with chlorine gas for half an hour at 200° C. Fractional distillation gave 43.2 parts by weight (60% of theory) of 3-(2'-chloro-4'-trifluoromethylphenoxy)-benzyl chloride of boiling point 135°-145° C. and refractive index nD25 : 1.5427.
