Toluene (3 mL) was added to (2-azido-benzyl)-prop-2-ynyl-carbamic acid tert-butyl ester (100 mg, 0.34 mmol) and the resulting mixture was heated at 100° C. overnight. When the reaction was complete as confirmed by TLC, solvent was removed in vacuo to afford 4H,6H-1,2,5,10b-tetraaza-benzo[e]azulene-5-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (92 mg, 92%) which was used as such without any further purification for the next step. ESIMS (m/z): 309.4 (M+Na), 287.1 (M+1).
