Procedure

1-(3-Diethoxymethyl-phenyl)-8,9-dihydro-7H-2,7,9a-triaza-benzo[cd]azulen-6-one (0.79 g, 2.18 mmol) was dissolved in EtOH (22 mL) and water (22 mL). Concentrated sulfuric acid (0.5 mL) was added, and the reaction brought to reflux for 5 h. The reaction mixture was cooled to rt, and the EtOH removed in vacuo. The residue was diluted with saturated NaHCO3, and the resulting solids were filtered and washed with water, then dried under vacuum overnight to produce 0.47 g (74%) of white solid: 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 3.54-3.55 (m, 2H), 4.50-4.51 (m, 2H), 7.39 (t, 1H, J=7.8 Hz), 7.88-7.96 (m, 2H), 8.09-8.10 (m, 4H), 8.46-8.50 (m, 1H), 10.13 (s, 1H).
