A process as set forth in claim 1 wherein 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanenitrile is hydrolyzed in the presence of sulfuric acid to produce an intermediate hydrolyzate comprising 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio) butanamide; and
