Procedure

2-(3-Cyanophenoxy)-3-[3-(pyridin-4-yl)propoxy]pyridine (1.15 g, 3.5 mmol) obtained in Example 41 is dissolved in methanol (50 ml), and thereto is added a 30% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (30 ml), and the mixture is heated under reflux for 20 hours. The reaction solution is concentrated under reduced pressure, and the pH value of the mixture is adjusted to pH 3 with a 15% aqueous hydrochloric acid solution, and the mixture is extracted with chloroform/THF (2:1) (50 ml×3). The organic layer is dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is purified by silica gel column chromatography (eluent: chloroform/methanol), and crystallized from diethyl ether to give the title compound (0.86 g) as colorless crystals, m.p. 208-209° C.
