To a solution of 5-methoxy-1H-indol-3yl-methanol 141 (115 mg, 0.643 mmol) dissolved in dichloromethane (3 ml), (1-methoxy-2-methyl-propenyloxy)-trimethylsilane (200 mg, 1 mmol) and magnesium perchlorate (164 mg, 0.74 mmol) were added. The reaction was allowed to stir at ambient temperature for 3–4 hours after after which the mixture was diluted with water (50 ml) and dichloromethane (DCM, 100 mL). The organic layer was separated and washed with water (50 mL; 3×). The organic layer was washed once with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and evaporated under reduced pressure to give an oil and purified with flash chromatography (silica with 80% hexane, 20% ethyl acetate to afford 142 as a light colored oil (150 mg; 88% yield; M+1=262.3).
