To a stirred solution of 2-[3-(2-tert-butoxycarbonylaminoethyl)-2-(3,5-dimethylphenyl)-1H-indol-5-yl]-2-methyl-propionic acid ethyl ester (1.28 g in 25 mL ethanol) was added 30 mL of 0.5N sodium hydroxide and the mixture heated to 90° C. on an oil bath. After 30 hours the mixture was concentrated in vacuo, diluted with water and extracted with diethyl ether (3×). The aqueous layer was then made acidic by the addition of 0.5N hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo to give the crude title compound (1.23 g).
