10.1 g of (±)-2-azabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-en-3-one were dissolved in a mixture of dichloromethane (10 ml), pyridine (8.4 ml) and 0.22 g of 4-N,N-dimethylamino-pyridine at 10° C. under nitrogen. 13.5 g of chloroacetyl chloride were added dropwise over the course of 1 h. The temperature rose to 44° C. The mixture was stirred for a further 2 h at room temperature. 100 ml of water were added to the solution. After phase separation, the aqueous phase was extracted with 100 ml of dichloromethane. The combined organic phases were dried with sodium sulphate and completely evaporated. The residue was boiled in 100 ml of diisopropyl ether under reflux in the presence of 1 g of active charcoal for 10 minutes. After hot filtration, the filtrate was cooled to room temperature, and the solid was filtered and dried. 10.35 g of title compound were obtained. The yield was 60%.
