0.8 g (2.4 mmol) of 3-(5-carboxy-2-furyl)-1-(2-phenylethyl)indazole were admixed with 25 ml of ethanol, 150 ml of toluene and 2 ml of conc. sulfuric acid and heated on a water separator for 3 h. Silica gel chromatography using dichloromethanelhexane (2:1) of the residue that was obtained after concentration using a rotary evaporator gave 400 mg (46%) of the title compound.
