A solution of (S)-(-)-N-[[2-oxo-3-[4-(4-piperidinyl)-3-fluorophenyl]-5-oxazolidinyllmethyl]acetamide (EXAMPLE 20, 125 mg) and pyridine (60 μL) in dry methylene chloride (1.9 mL) at 0° C. is treated with methanesulfonyl chloride (32 μL), and the resulting mixture was stirred at 0° C. for one hour and at ambient temperature for 16 hours. The reaction mixture is then diluted with methylene chloride (30 mL), washed with water (10 mL) and saline (10 mL), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue is recrystallized from methylene chloride/diethyl ether to give the title compound, mp 240-242° C.
